Menopause: Symptoms, Complications & Treatments

If you’re a woman entering your 40s or 50s, it’s normal to experience symptoms such as mood changes, hot flashes, insomnia, and many others that prove disruptive to daily life. These signs of discomfort may indicate the natural female phase known as menopause. Hormones begin to decline as we enter our 30s. Because they affect how we look, feel, and function, Outset Health’s programs and your trusted physician can help bio-identically increase and stabilize your unbalanced hormones. Our goal is to help our patients live longer, healthier, and more comfortable lives.

What is Menopause?

Menopause is how a woman’s menstrual cycles naturally come to an end. If you are unsure if you have begun menopause or not, first ask yourself if you have gone 12 months or more without any periods. Next, have you experienced symptoms disrupting your well-being, such as diminished libido, mood changes and hot flashes? If so, your body could naturally be decreasing its reproductive hormones known as estrogen and progesterone. Outset Health and your physician can help get you back on track.

Potential Complications of Menopause

Although there are numerous symptoms that can arise from menopause, there are additional, more serious complications that women are at risk for as well.

Osteoporosis

Decreasing estrogen levels can lead to a loss of bone tissue throughout the body. Not only is it estimated that 80% of the people who have the condition are women, but it is also estimated that 1 out of 2 women over 50 years of age will experience a bone fracture.

Cardiovascular disease

Estrogen helps the flexibility of blood vessels throughout the body, which naturally supports the proper blood flow. When estrogen levels drastically decrease, the risk of a heart attack rises. Unfortunately, cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death for both women and men, especially later in life.

Urinary incontinence

As estrogen levels decrease, so does the elasticity of the pelvic floor. Due to this loss, the tissues in the urethra and vagina can weaken. This may result in urinary incontinence and even lead to an increase of urinary tract infections.

Other symptoms of menopause include:

  • Hot flashes
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Insomnia
  • Irregular menstruation
  • Weight gain
  • Diminished libido
  • Increased heart rate
  • Breast tenderness/soreness
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Difficulty with memory and concentration
  • Hair thinning
  • Dry skin
  • Joint stiffness/pain
